Ask E-Bob!

Question:

A traveling user from Northeast Iowa asks:

While gone this summer I would like to access my e-mail while away from home. Can my home computer be turned off or does it need to remain on to see my mail?

Answer:

Good question. When you have an e-mail account, it is receiving e-mail at all times. When you start your compute and open your e-mail application, like Outlook Express, that goes to the server and downloads what is waiting there for you. Since the server is always receiving mail, you can power off your personal machine and the server will continue to do its job.

If you want to view your e-mail while at a machine other than your home one, you can access our Webmail at http://webmail.netINS.net. If your e-mail address does not end with @netINS.net, you can go to your e-mail provider's homepage and look for webmail type options there.
