Problems with netINS e-mail service identified in late April have been addressed. Over the course of the last two months netINS has implemented major hardware upgrades to our core e-mail server cluster.

These upgrades have addressed the following symptoms:

  • Sending e-mail was slower than usual, so instead of going directly to my "Sent Items" folder the message appears to stay in my "Outbox" longer while trying to send.
  • Either using an e-mail program like Outlook Express or using netINS Webmail, it takes longer to view both the list of messages and to "get" messages to view.

All of these problems were because of a massive increase in both appropriate and especially inappropriate use of e-mail.

Our Technical Support department (http://eSupport.netINS.net/) is available to help you 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with Internet problems. Don't hesitate to contact us for help.

We will continue to monitor the situation and provide regular updates as further improvements become necessary.

This is the third phase of a multi-part conversion to a new storage organization for our Internet services. There will be additional maintenance activities in the next several weeks as we complete the migration of services to the new organization. This phase will complete the move of our primary service data (except for e-mail) to the new storage organization. The remaining phases will include a relatively short outage to clean up some details in the organizational structure, and the migration of e-mail to the new storage organization.
It is expected that the migration of e-mail will require two separate outages to migrate all of the e-mail data. Those outages should impact only the e-mail service. The move of e-mail is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, May 31 and the weekend of June 3-4 (the specific date is yet to be determined). One final outage may be required to complete migration of data into the final storage locations. Each of those additional activities will be announced separately.

April 27, 2006

We have received a number of calls recently related to performance issues with email. These problems affect both receiving and sending email. This is an update on problems we have found while investigating this situation, and what we are doing to try to resolve the problems.

These are the symptoms we are hearing from customers:

  • Sending email is slower than usual, so instead of going directly to my "Sent Items" folder the message appears to stay in my "Outbox" longer while trying to send.
  • Email you send to other email addresses on the Internet do not get to the recipient as fast as you have been used to.
  • Email sent by other addresses don't get to you as soon as you would expect them to.
  • Either using an email program like Outlook Express or using netINS Webmail, it takes longer to view both the list of messages and to "get" messages to view.

All of these problems are resulting from a massive increase in both appropriate and especially inappropriate use of email. Even though you don't see all of the junk email that netINS receives for your account, our servers still need to process them. This exponential increase in junk email attempts has created a situation in which our email server hardware is running at near capacity.

Numerous efforts are currently underway to fix these problems. Upgrades to both hardware and software on our redundant email server cluster are being implemented. Due to the large amounts of email these upgrades will take some time. Over the course of the next month these upgrades will be implemented as quickly as possible to ensure best possible service.

Our Technical Support department (http://eSupport.netINS.net/) is available to help you 24 hours a day, 365 days a year with Internet problems. Don't hesitate to contact us for help.

Thanks for your continued patronage, we look forward to implementing these improvements to your service.

AOL bounce messages

netINS is continuing to look for ways to shield it's users from the effects of spam email. One issue is when the spam has a forged "sender" address that is a netINS.net account. That netINS account would then be sent any bounce messages resulting from that forged message. This problem is rapidly getting worse, bad enough at times to disrupt mail service for everyone.

AOL.com is the largest single source of bounce messages from such forged email. Research indicates more than 90% of all bounces from AOL are inappropriate. Currently their servers accept email for *any* AOL address, then later bounce a failure message back to the sender if the AOL account does not exist. They know this is happening and are in the process of fixing it, but that fix may not be complete until the end of this year.

Until that is fixed, we have asked AOL to stop sending bounce messages to netINS.net addresses. This means that if you send email from your netINS.net account to an AOL address, and the AOL servers accept it but it doesn't get delivered (account is over quota, or there was some other error after AOL accepted the email), you will not receive a bounce notification from AOL.

Please note that this has only been implemented for netINS.net accounts at this time. We regret any inconvenience that this may cause.

The functions that programs like Callwave can provide are very similar to what netINS can offer you for free! If your computer has a modem that uses the v.92 protocol with Modem On Hold† as a supported feature you can take advantage of these features today.

There is one major difference between Modem On Hold† and Callwave. The difference is that Callwave can record a voicemail for you that you can listen to once you connect to the Internet. Both technologies allow you to determine if you have an incoming call and discover the identity of the caller if you have purchased Caller ID service from your telephone company.

Check out our new eSupport site to compare the two and choose the tool that's right for you!

Cut down on Unwanted "SPAM" Email!

The new email server installed last winter has the capabilities to cut down on "spam" by setting up filters. "Spam" is a common nickname for unsolicited bulk email. The filters are available through the webmail client but are rather complicated. We have written 4 (ready-made) filters with step by step instructions and diagrams. Use the instructions to build these filters and do away with a good portion of the "spam" you get everyday. Feel free to build more "custom" filters in the Webmail interface as you feel more comfortable with the process!

Visit netINS Support to learn more!

27-December-2001

With the implementation of our new mail servers, netINS is now scanning all emails for virus content. Messages (inbound, or outbound) that contain a virus are cleaned (virus is removed) and then bounced back to the originator. If the "cleansing" step cannot be completed, then the message is bounced with a note that it contained a virus. The attachment with the virus is removed from the bounce message. Virus definitions are provided by McAfee Virus-Scan software. This is one of the first steps in many new features that we will be implementing in the coming months as a result of having moved to the new mail server.

07-December-2001

The new mail servers are now up and functional. The changes listed http://netINS.net/convert/ are nescessary for you to be able to connect to the Internet. If you are having trouble connecting please contact tech support at 1-800-205-1110.

The transition to the new servers resulted in a service outage that we regret. We apologize for any inconvenience the maintenance may have caused. Look for announcements in the coming weeks regarding the new features you'll be able to take advantage of as a result of the new servers being in place!

In the past you used your username (john) and password to connect to netINS. In order for us to switch to the new system we need you to use your email address (john@netins.net) and password instead. NOTE: Your password will NOT change as a result of this upgrade.

We are pleased to announce a new service, free of charge to netINS customers. The netINS Unreal Tournament Server is now available for high speed connections! Fans of the successful Unreal gaming franchise may now log on and play with up to 15 others at a time. While access may be available to those connecting with a dialup modem, it is not recommended. Slow (56Kbps or less) connections will disrupt the gameplay for all participants, even if all others are on high speed connections.

To get access, simply point your broswer to the netINS Unreal Tournament page at:

http://netins.net/gameserver/

From there, you will need to enter your email username and password and submit. If you successfully submitted your password, you will be provided with the current IP address and password for the game server. This information will change, so it is important to stop back here often.

In addition, netINS Technical Support will not be able to assist in troubleshooting connection issues to the server or software configuration. In the event of a server outage or network downtime, Tech Support will be available to provide such information. As always, their telephone number is 1-800-205-1110.

The maintenance is part of the ongoing upgrade plans to the netINS network. Further announcements will be made as more network changes are implemented.

Unless otherwise indicated, the operations window is scheduled from 2:00 AM, to 7:00 AM.

11-May-2001

The main netINS servers will be down for maintenance on Thursday, May 17, 2001 from 2:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. Because these servers are in a clustered environment, all netINS services will continue to be available during the majority of this period. However, all services will have several short durations of downtime when they are relocated to one of the other cluster members. Downtimes for any of these services will be a matter of a few minutes (less than 10), with the exception of DNS. When the DNS services are moved to other cluster members, there will be a period of approximately 45 minutes of downtime to restart the DNS server. During these outages, any attempts to perform web browsing, send or receive e-mail, or read Usenet news will be disrupted. We will attempt to schedule the maintenance such that there is only one or two periods where DNS is impacted.

We expect to complete this system maintenance (adding additional memory and disk drives/swap space) during this period of time. If we are unable to complete the maintenance during this window, we will reserve the period of 2:00 to 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 22 as an alternate window for the maintenance.

Thanks for your patience during this maintenance activity.
